Coastal Texas: wind-rated garage doors and the WPI-8
TDI's rules apply if your home is in the first row of Texas counties bordering the Gulf of Mexico, or in one of these Harris County cities east of State Highway 146: La Porte, Morgan's Point, Pasadena, Seabrook or Shore Acres. (source: Texas Department of Insurance)
- Ask your insurance agent whether your repairs need to meet the International Building Code or International Residential Code.
- If your insurer requires that, talk to your agent or adjuster about the Windstorm Inspections Program.
- If the repairs are inspected and comply, TDI issues a Certificate of Compliance, Form WPI-8.
- Do not make your final payment until the work is finished and the WPI-8 is issued.

Choosing and installing the door
- TDI's 2017 guide says garage door failures were linked to 80 percent of home failures in recent hurricanes.
- Most major manufacturers have product listings with TDI. In high wind areas, published wind ratings matter.
- If the door has glass panels, consider an impact resistant door.
- Install the door strictly by the manufacturer's instructions for its tested high wind application.
